The Past Perfect Tense

The Past perfect tense

The Past perfect tense is a verb tense in English that describes an action that happened before another action in the past. It is also known as the pluperfect tense in English.

To form past perfect tense sentences, we use the past tense form of the auxiliary verb "have" or "has," which is "had," along with the past participle of the main verb.

When using this tense, time adverbs such as "when", "before", and "by the time" are often used to indicate the temporal order of the two events.

Sentence structure:

Subject+had+V3...

For Example:

  • I had already finished my exam when the teacher said it was over.
  • I had already finished my homework before I went to the cinema

  • This came after the company said it has completed inspections on the first group of the aircrafts.
